A source for dark, tannic, plummy wines in France (Cahors, Bordeaux, Loire Valley), Argentina, Chile and less frequently the US and Australia, Malbec’s primary role is to add color, backbone and richness in small doses to wines that are predominantly Cabernet Sauvigon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, or Gamay. The two places that do produce a quantity of Malbec-centric products are Argentina and Cahors with the former now producing a number of wines that are of extremely high quality. |
